Conventional Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for these problems is "malocclusion," which means "bad bite." The practice of orthodontics requires professional skill in the design, application and control of corrective appliances, such as braces, to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and to achieve facial balance.

Orthodontic treatment can improve your dental health and change your facial appearance for the better, and it can boost your self-esteem. It can provide you with the chance to participate in improving the way you look. Patients often feel more self-confident even before treatment is completed.

Children and adults can both benefit from orthodontics, because healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age. Because monitoring growth and development is crucial to managing some orthodontic problems well, we, in SUNNYSIDE DENTAL, recommend that all children have an orthodontic screening no later than at age 7. Some orthodontic problems may be easier to correct if treated early. Waiting until all the permanent teeth have come in, or until facial growth is nearly complete, may make correction of some problems more difficult.

Most malocclusions are inherited, but some are acquired. Inherited problems include crowding of teeth, too much space between teeth, extra or missing teeth, and a wide variety of other irregularities of the jaws, teeth and face.

Acquired malocclusions can be caused by trauma (accidents), thumb, finger or dummy (pacifier) sucking, airway obstruction by tonsils and adenoids, dental disease or premature loss of primary (baby) or permanent teeth. Whether inherited or acquired, many of these problems affect not only alignment of the teeth but also facial development and appearance as well.

Implants

If you are missing one or more of your natural teeth, dental implants are an ideal way to regain your smile with natural-looking teeth. Unlike removable bridges and dentures, dental implants are fixed solidly and permanently into your jaw. They do not become loose or ill-fitting over time, and because they replicate the entire structure of a tooth from root to crown, they look and feel just like natural teeth. Dr. Yapport takes great care in determining the placement of the implants and in tailoring the design of crowns, bridges, and dentures to the unique shape of each patient's mouth, so you can be confident our implants will blend seamlessly and comfortably with the rest of your smile. How Does Implant Dentistry Work?

When you decide to restore your smile with dental implants at Sunnyside Dental, you're choosing to replace more than just your missing tooth or teeth. The treatment actually involves replacing the root of a missing or seriously damaged tooth with a titanium fixture — the implant itself. After being surgically inserted into the jawbone, the implant is eventually used as a solid anchor for porcelain crowns or bridges, or even a full set of dentures. In addition to the skill and expertise of your dentist, your own body's natural healing abilities play an important role in implant dentistry. After the titanium replacement roots have been implanted, there is a recovery period lasting between two and six months. During that time, the jawbone grows naturally around the dental implants, securing them firmly in the jaw. Once the implants have taken root, custom-crafted replacement teeth will be fixed to them. Through Dr. Yapport's expertise in implant dentistry, and careful planning and design, dental implants at Sunnyside Dental, are made to align perfectly with the rest of your teeth.

Who Is Eligible for Implant Dentistry?

Implant dentistry utilizes your own capacity to heal; that's why at Sunnyside Dental, patients are carefully screened to ensure they meet all the requirements for surgery. We review your medical and dental history and conduct a thorough examination of your entire mouth. Once you are determined to be eligible for dental implants at our practice, Dr. Yapport and her team may need to create diagnostic records, which are used to develop the best strategy for your particular needs.

Choosing the Right Dentist

Careful planning and a thorough understanding of all the issues involved in your case are important aspects of successful surgery. That's why you'll want to select a dentist with extensive training and experience to perform every stage of your dental implant procedure. Cosmetic Crowns and Veneers

If you've ever wondered why so many individuals in public life have such perfect smiles, you might be surprised to find out how many of them have had cosmetic dental work!

One way that we can make your smile more attractive is to place porcelain laminate veneers or jacket crowns. Porcelain veneers are translucent, thin laminates made to improve the esthetics (shape, spacing, color) of natural teeth, to correct crowding, or to replace composite bonding.

If you already have crowns on your front teeth, replacement with all porcelain jacket crowns may give you a more natural, attractive appearance. Or think about cosmetic repositioning as an alternative to orthodontics with the placement of porcelain veneers as seen below.

Before and after two porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers and crowns are extremely lifelike and hold their brilliance, unlike bonding which often appears bulky or fake. Although porcelain is an extremely translucent material, it is also very strong. Porcelain veneers and crowns are permanent restorations, and they can be expected to last for many years. Also, there are no food restrictions - once they are cemented you can eat normally (apples, corn on the cob, etc.) - porcelain simply covers the imperfections in your own smile!

Before & After

Porcelain jacket crowns and laminate veneers both require two office visits. At the first appointment we remove any old bonding and prepare the teeth. We also take impressions and choose the shade and shape of the porcelain. When you leave the office, temporary bonding is used to cover the prepared teeth. Approximately one week later, the porcelain veneers or crowns are permanently cemented at the second appointment. You may find the solution to your individual dental problem by viewing the before and after photos of our patients who have had cosmetic dentistry improve their smiles. With digital imaging software, we can show you how cosmetic dentistry can improve your smile before you begin treatment.

Invisalign

Invisalign is the invisible way to straighten your teeth without braces. Invisalign uses a series of clear removable aligners to straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets. Invisalign has been proven effective in clinical research and in orthodontic practices nationwide. This 21st Century orthodontic approach allows our patients to undergo orthodontic treatment without anyone noticing they are wearing braces. Instead of metal wires and brackets we use a series of plastic aligners design to move your teeth to correct position. Invisalign also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start, so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete. Computerized 3D animation will show exactly how much and where your teeth will move at any point of the treatment.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment treats disorders of the nerve of the tooth. It used to be that a tooth with a diseased or infected nerve had to be removed. In 95% of the cases today, however, this is no longer true. In SUNNYSIDE DENTAL we believe in saving teeth (instead of removing them). In our office we make every effort to help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime!

What makes a root canal necessary?

The following are the most common factors contributing to a need for root canal treatment:

Regardless of initial cause, the tooth nerve becomes irritated and infected. Bacteria grow within the tooth nerve, causing pressure and pain, sometimes accompanied by swelling of the face. Sometimes the deterioration of the nerve happens so gradually that little pain is felt. Either way, eventually the bacteria can destroy the nerve. As this happens, the bone surrounding the tooth may become infected and abscessed, which may lead to the destruction of the bone surrounding the tooth.

What happens during treatment?

If we determine through x-rays and clinical examination that root canal treatment is necessary, we will schedule a series of appointments for you. It is important that you keep these appointments to prevent delays in treatment and healing, which can affect the outcome. It's also essential that you take all antibiotics and medications prescribed to hasten healing and reduce swelling.

What care follows the treatment?

Once root canal treatment has been completed, you should consider the following:

  1. Brittleness - A non-vital tooth is more brittle than a vital one and is more susceptible to fracture. Therefore, in most cases, we recommend that your root canal tooth be crowned (capped) following treatment.
  2. Discoloration - You may notice that your treated tooth (especially a front tooth) has undergone a change in color. Though this discoloration is of no medical concern, you may be interested in having the tooth whitened. Be sure to ask us about tooth whitening if we do not decide to place a crown on the tooth.

Teeth Whitening

Discoloration of your teeth may be the result of genetics, medication, poor oral hygiene, aging, smoking, certain foods and beverages or a combination of these factors. People with most types of discoloration can achieve lighter teeth through the procedure called Teeth Whitening. The type of stains you have will affect how much whitening you will experience.

At SUNNYSIDE DENTAL we will tell you exactly how much whiter your teeth can be. When used under our supervision, the whitening procedure is safe and will not harm teeth or gums. In most cases we will prepare a special tray made from the impression taking in our office so it will fit your teeth precisely. Wearing this tray for about half hour twice a day filling it with the whitening agent for the time we will recommend will make your smile whiter and healthier.

Teeth whitening is offered at no additional charge to patients who undergo significant procedures, such as Invisalign or Full Mouth Restoration, at our office.
